# Connect Slack to Profound

> Install the Profound app in your Slack workspace, choose what it can do, and start using AI Marketer in Slack

The Profound app for Slack brings AI Marketer into your workspace. Ask about your brand's AI visibility, citations, and competitors in a channel or a direct message, and get answers, files, and links to Profound documents right in the thread. The same connection can also send Agent results to Slack channels, start automations from Slack messages and reactions, and deliver Profound notifications privately.

## How Profound works in Slack

* **Ask in a channel.** Mention **@Profound** in a public or private channel it's a member of. Profound replies in a thread, and replies in that thread continue the conversation without another mention.
* **Ask privately.** Send Profound a direct message, or open the Profound app's **Messages** tab and pick a suggested prompt.
* **Get results where you work.** Profound reacts with 👀 while it works and ✅ when it's done. It uploads files it generates to the thread, links documents it creates in Profound, and asks before it takes an action that needs your approval.
* **Deliver and trigger.** Agents can post their results to channels you choose, and messages or reactions in channels you choose can start automations.
* **Notify.** Profound can send private notifications to people whose Slack account matches their Profound account.

## Before you start

You'll need:

* A [Profound](https://www.tryprofound.com/) account with the admin role. Only admins can connect accounts and manage channels.
* Permission to install apps in your Slack workspace. If your workspace [requires approval for apps](https://slack.com/help/articles/222386767-Manage-app-approval-for-your-workspace), a Slack admin needs to approve Profound.

## Setup guide

To locate the Slack integration in the Profound platform:

* In Profound, select your organization name in the top-left corner of the platform, then select **Settings**.
* In the left sidebar, select **Integrations** under **Account**.
* Search for **Slack** and select it.

    In the Slack integration view, navigate to the **Integration** tab and select **Add account**.

    In the **Choose Slack permissions** dialog, select one or more purposes. The list under the purposes updates to show every Slack permission they need.

    [Permissions and security](/integrations/slack/slack-permissions-and-security) lists each permission and why Profound needs it. When you're ready, select **Continue**.

      When you connect Slack from an Agent's Slack node, the purpose that node needs is already selected.

  <Step title="Approve Profound in Slack">
    Slack opens its authorization page. Confirm that it shows the workspace you want to connect, review the permissions, and select **Allow**.

  <Step title="Verify the connection">
    Slack returns you to Profound. If the workspace appears in the list of connected accounts, Profound is installed and ready to use.

    If the account shows **Connected—setup incomplete**, Slack didn't grant every permission a selected purpose needs. Select **Retry setup** to authorize again with the same purposes.

<Note>
  A Slack workspace connects to Profound once, and its purposes can't be changed after setup finishes. To use different purposes, [revoke the connection](#revoking-access-and-uninstalling) and connect the workspace again.

## After you connect

    On the **Integration** tab, under **Slack channels**, select **Add AI Marketer to channel** and search for a public channel. To add AI Marketer to a private channel, tag **@Profound** in the channel.

  <Step title="Link your Slack account">
    Profound matches each person to their own Profound account, so answers only use data that person can access in Profound.

    If the email on your Slack profile matches your Profound account, Profound recognizes you automatically. Otherwise, the first time you message Profound, it sends you a private message with a **Link account** button. Select it, then select **Verify with Slack** on the **Link your Slack identity** page. The link expires after 15 minutes.

    To review or revoke your linked identity, open the Slack integration in Profound and navigate to the **User identity** tab.

  <Step title="Start a conversation">
    Mention **@Profound** in a channel or send it a direct message. The **Messages** tab suggests prompts to start with:

    * Summarize my brand's AI visibility
    * Which sources get cited most?
    * Compare me to a competitor

  <Step title="Choose an organization and category">
    If you can use more than one Profound organization or category, Profound asks which ones to use in this workspace. Pick them in the message Profound sends. To check or reset your choice later, use these commands in Slack:

    * `/profound-org status` or `/profound-org reset`
    * `/profound-category status` or `/profound-category reset`

    You can also set a **Default category** on the **User identity** tab of the Slack integration in Profound.

## Using Profound in Slack

* **Threads:** Anyone who can see a thread with Profound can reply to it, and Profound answers every reply with the Profound access of the person who started the thread. Start conversations about restricted data in a direct message or a private channel.
* **Files you share:** Attach up to 3 files to a message, 10 MB each and 20 MB in total. Profound reads CSV, TXT, Markdown, PNG, JPG, WebP, PDF, XLSX, DOCX, and PPTX files, including files posted earlier in the thread.
* **Files Profound creates:** Profound uploads generated files to the thread, up to 10 files of 10 MB each per reply. Documents and apps it creates in Profound are listed under **Created in Profound** with a link.
* **Stopping and approvals:** Select **Stop** to end a response. When an action needs your approval, Profound posts **Approve** and **Deny** buttons.
* **Document previews:** Links to Profound documents on `platform.tryprofound.com` expand into a preview. Documents shared only with specific people show as **Private Profound Doc**.

## Revoking access and uninstalling

To disconnect a workspace, open the Slack integration in Profound, open the **...** action menu on the connected account, and select **Revoke**. Profound deletes its stored Slack token and stops responding in the workspace. When no other Profound connection uses the workspace, Profound also asks Slack to revoke the token.

You can also [remove the Profound app](https://slack.com/help/articles/360003125231-Remove-apps-and-custom-integrations-from-your-workspace) from your workspace in Slack. If you do, also revoke the connection in Profound so Profound deletes the stored token.

## Troubleshooting

    Slack didn't grant every permission a selected purpose needs. The dialog lists the purposes that are missing permissions. Select **Retry setup** to authorize again with the same purposes, and approve every permission Slack shows.

  <Accordion title="Profound says the workspace is already connected">
    Each Slack workspace connects to Profound once, and the existing connection keeps its token and purposes. To use different purposes, revoke the existing connection and connect the workspace again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Profound doesn't reply">
    * Check that the connection includes the **Workspace bot** purpose. Connections with only Workflow messages, Automation triggers, or Notifications don't answer conversations.
    * In a channel, check that Profound is a member and that you mentioned **@Profound**.
    * If Profound sent you a **Link account** message, finish linking your account first.

    Links expire after 15 minutes. Request a new one from the private message Profound sent you, or send **link account** to Profound in its **Messages** tab.

  <Accordion title="An Agent's Slack node can't use the workspace">
    An Agent that sends messages needs a connection with the **Workflow messages** purpose, and an Agent started by messages or reactions needs **Automation triggers**. If the workspace was connected without the purpose the node needs, revoke the connection and connect again with every purpose you use.
